7 Free Keyword Tools for Thousands of Keyword Suggestions
Before there was Google way back before SEO there we're copywriters. We wrote content that fit the strategy and hit the target market right between the eyes. Things haven't changed much since then or have they? With online content creation, you have to take a lot more into consideration, and one of those things is your key words.
Tanget! Wishing to help upgrade the bland look for my own website. Musings concerning the whole appearance at http://peachblitz.com? Truly an awesome web design service when needed in the general Ontario region. Leave your feedback. Thx!
To get the right key terms, you have to really dig in. You have to build a big list and then refine it for the optimal (or as close to) terms to target. We decided to look at some of the tools that might make your day, and your work, a little easier.
Now, many of the million results in the SERPs for keyword tool talk about how they're the best product and seem to have glowing testimonials to back them up. It makes you wonder who's faking testimonials
The truth is it's hard to tell which keyword tool is the best, especially since the best depends on the user and his or her needs. What we can do is narrow down the list a bit; while you're reading, see if one or two might come in handy for your day-to-day projects.
In the list below, we share tools you can use for keyword suggestions. Keyword suggestion tools are great places to start before you begin any SEO campaign. Theyre also a good place to go when building a content strategy campaign. Not only can they help you come up with terms you might have missed, but they can also help you define and refine your website niche, your social communication and, of course, your authority on any given topic.
Wordtracker
Its interesting that many keyword tools are built on the Wordtracker platform, which is a good indication that it provides worthwhile information. You have to sign up for a free account to see more than 10 words, but for the amount of suggestions Wordtracker offers, the excruciatingly long five seconds is well worth the time.
Although the paid version of Wordtracker provides more information, the free version is nothing to sneeze at. Each time you put in a search term, you have a list of 100 words to look through. You have 20 searches allowed per 24 hour period.
If you choose to pay the subscription price for the full keyword tool, it's $69.00 per month. The full keyword tool has some great capabilities the free tool doesn't have, such as being able to pull Google Adwords information into the tool and manage large keyword lists and, if you don't know already, organization is important.
WordStream
WordStream is another well-known keyword tool, and it's well known for a reason. The hardest part of grabbing a list of keyword suggestions from WordStream is entering the captcha. Once you do, you get a small list of key term suggestions along with how often the term is searched.
The really nice thing about WordStream is the number of terms you get back. Although you only get a few on the actual page, if you enter your email address you get sent to a download. Whereas WordTracker only sent back 100 results total, WordStream sent an Excel file with a whopping 10,000 potential key terms. If you use Excel with any regularity, you can quickly use the Excel sheet to categorize and organize the keywords into buyer and researcher categories.
What WordTracker also has going for them is a few more free keyword tools, such as the Keyword Niche Finder. Type in your search term and the Niche Finder separates the returned keywords into categories. This is very useful for those who might need help with key term categorization.
Suggester
For a plain jane, no frills keyword suggestion tool, Suggester the free Google Suggest keyword research tool - does a good job of returning key terms. One search returned 357 terms, actively used in search queries.
Now, as you can see in the image, the top terms may not be relevant to your actual search. However, once the search is narrowed (we used seo analysis for a tighter focus), the top terms are more relevant. If you're just beginning an SEO campaign and badly need ideas for search terms to research, Suggester is a quick, down and dirty way to grab inspiration.
WordPot
WordPot is one of those programs that show up on the front page of the SERPs that maybe shouldnt. Maybe we didn't use it correctly? From the front page, you put in your search term and it returns (maybe) 50 results. We created a free account, signed in, entered the same search and got 50 results. The top 2 returns are seo and gary pool seo (which shows three times in various forms).
Just in case it's the search term, we changed it from seo (used for all the keyword tools in this article) to press. Wordpot then decides press means newspapers aka the fourth estate. It then returns results for estate agents, real estate listings even bread machine.
Now, maybe Wordpot isn't the best tool for getting keyword suggestions. What it might help you with is seeing how many ways one word can be looked at by a computer program. For example, Wordpot returned beseech as a synonym for press that took a minute to figure out
Keyword Discovery
Trellians Keyword Discovery tool returns a whopper of a list. For SEO, the tool brought back 991 results. Other than a few geo-specific terms, it provides an excellent list of suggestions just don't pay attention to the numbers on the right side. According to the tool, SEO only received 572 searches over the past 12 months.
Now, the Keyword Discovery tool has some hefty features, but only in the paid versions (ranging from $600 to almost $5,000 per year, depending on the package). For the free version anyone can reach, it's simply a really good list of suggestions. Of course, you could spend a while just tracking down suggestions, especially if mining information is what you call fun it's what we call fun.
Google AdWords
Theres a reason why so many developers use the Google Adwords API mainly because it returns strong data. Its not completely accurate data, but then, no tool does that yet.
Free, without an account, you can get a return of 100 words. While that may not sound like much, Google Adwords also shows you the competition level for the keyword if you decide to compete in PPC. It shows global and local monthly searches, which can help you decide whether a term is worth using or not.
One of the best things about this keyword tool is the local search trends. In the final column, Google Adwords shows a lovely green graph indicating whether a search term is trending or not. If you see a dramatic drop in search, you might decide to look at other terms first.
The results are relevant, as well. For example, a search for press doesn't return real estate
iSpionage
Last but not least, there's iSpionage. Quite frankly, iSpionage may give you more information than you need for pure keyword suggestions.
The summary page, which is the first one to load after you enter your term, gives you Top PPC Competitors in Google and Yahoo. It shows you a short list of related keywords, their search volume and advertiser competition level. You also see the top ads in Google and top competitors in the Google SERPs. Finally, it gives you a list of social mentions.
Unfortunately for those looking for free keyword tools, iSpionage gives you more information in the summary page than it does on interior tabs. Once you click on the tabs to delve deeper, the data disappears after the 8th or 9th entry, to be filled in with a members only comment.
The paid version offers in depth information and a large amount of available searches. If you decide you like what iSpionage offers as a teaser, you can subscribe for a monthly fee ranging from $59 to $129 per month.
Should you pay for a keyword research tool?
Thats a really good question, and only one that you can really answer. The first question to ask is, Am I trying to make money with my site? The second is, Can I afford the monthly fee?
Conclusion
Finding keywords is one of the most basic parts of an SEO campaign. As SEOs and content developers will tell you, sometimes even the business owners have no clue what their money making keywords are. With tools like these, you can automate the research process at little bit, which is obviously easier. As well, they can show you highly targeted, low hanging fruit you can build a strong campaign around.
If you have any competition online and who doesn't even this basic SEO research can help you move up the ranks. Your key terms help search engines decide relevance to a search query. So, as you can guess, having the right ones are kind of important.
When it comes to keyword tools, the best one is really all of them put together. Sure, you end up with lots of terms and information to go through, but ranking for the right terms is well worth the time.
